Accutane: An Introductory Overview

Outline

Isotretinoin is an oral retinoid historically known under the brand name Accutane. It is usually reserved for severe, nodular, scarring, or otherwise treatment-resistant acne. Unlike topical agents or extended antibiotic courses, isotretinoin works on several core acne processes and often delivers prolonged remissions.

How it helps: isotretinoin reduces the size and activity of sebaceous glands, decreases sebum production, helps normalize shedding of skin cells inside pores, and lowers inflammatory signals. Together these effects reduce the formation of new lesions and lower the risk of permanent scarring. If you want other options, see Related Drugs and Other possible therapies.

Capsules are available in multiple strengths, typically 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 mg. Treatment plans are individualized based on body weight, therapeutic response, and side effect tolerance. Many prescribers aim for a cumulative dose around 120 to 150 mg per kg over a course lasting about 4 to 6 months. Practical dosing notes are in Steps for Taking and safety checks are listed under Health monitoring and What to Be On the Lookout For and Unwanted reactions.
